October 08, 2019 Catalina Island, located in the Pacific ocean, became available to all users of compatible devices. On it you will no longer find iTunes, but you can plunge into the reborn world of mobile gaming with Apple Arcade, already waiting in the Mac App Store. 🙂 macOS Catalina is already available for free download on the Mac App Store. It’s our first macOS Catalina Review.
Of course, individual applications will be much easier option “all in one”. Apple Music has focused on streaming, the user’s library, downloaded tracks and selections, as well as purchasing tracks from the iTunes Store.
macOS Catalina Music, TV and Podcast:
The Apple TV app is actually the same as on set-top boxes, but with an interface sharpened for mouse or trackpad control. Of course, here you will find channels, TV series, movies and other content distributed in 4K HDR resolution and with Dolby Atmos support, which will please owners of home theaters or decent equipment. Special attention should be paid to the sections “Watch now” and “Next” – for sure you will use them most often.
The podcasts brought more than 700,000 motley shows with support for new episode release notifications. The app also features relevant categories, selections from editors around the world, and a tricky search engine capable of finding podcasts by host name, topic of discussion, or invited guest.
If you’re still syncing over cable, the process won’t change: when you connect to a Mac, the device will immediately appear on the sidebar, and you can back up, update, and restore.
macOS Catalina Sidecar Function:
In the review of iPadOS, we already mentioned the use of the iPad as an additional workspace for the Mac, and this feature is called Sidecar. Editing video, drawing in graphic editors or markup in text-ideal scenarios for using an additional “panel”, the role of which is performed by the tablet.
macOS Catalina Sidecar supported Macs:
But here lies the catch! The Sidecar function only works on laptops with the long-suffering Butterfly keyboard, namely:
MacBook from 2016 or newer;
MacBook Air from 2018 and newer ;
MacBook Pro from 2016 and newer (in them Apple began to put a “Butterfly” in 2016)
As for desktops, Sidecar will take off on skylake chipsets and newer:
Mac mini from 2018 and newer
iMac from 2015 and newer
The New Mac Pro 2019
Also keep in mind that for comfortable work you need a fairly new iPad, although with tablets the situation is simpler, since Apple claims that there will be enough capacity for any gadget with iPadOS 13 on Board.
macOS Catalina Screen Time:
macOS Catalina followed in the footsteps of iOS and brought a screen time feature showing how much time a user spends behind a Mac.
macOS Catalina Share Folder:
The “Share folder” function via iCloud Drive, which was supposed to start in macOS at the dawn of the corporate cloud, will appear only in the spring of 2020. In early beta versions of macOS Catalina, right-clicking on any folder in iCloud Drive opened a menu that generated a private link to the folder with the ability to transfer via AirDrop, Messages, Mail, or other services. However, this is not the first and not the last time when testing new and exciting features is beyond the scope of the release date.
From iPad to Mac:
The catalyst project (Mac Catalyst), which bridges the gap between desktop and mobile platforms, is today associated with the tool of porting applications from iPad to Mac. Starting with macOS Catalina and Xcode 11, developers can create a Mac version of a tablet application using UIKit, an Apple framework hitherto combined exclusively with iOS products.
macOS Catalina is already available for free download on the Mac App Store.
